| Lin Daiyu burying fallen petals |
095-1105
Harrisumn has prescribed bed-rest for everyone who was injured in the battle, but Captain Elleder is worried about the ship's credit balance, so he sends Tandery, Korilu, and Lin into port to look for passengers and freight. After a few mind-numbing queues to file destination-posting paperwork -- the forms are on actual paper with real carbon-copy sheets beneath for convenience -- they are more than ready for lunch on the Captain's credit stash.
Whilst they are trying to decide which restaurant looks the least awful, Korilu's eyes go suddenly wide and she runs off to embrace someone in the crowd. The man wears an array of ultra-stylish designer clothes from a dozen worlds. Individually, the gudu-leather belt, pink twill tunic, seaweave half-cardigan, tri-crystal sash, houndstooth trousers, vacc-racer sandals, and marsh-straw visor would be the height of fashion, but taken together the cacophony of styles is as garish as his iridescent fur cape.
"Dear gods," says Lin. "And I'd just gotten used to Korilu's sense of style."
"That was fast," says Tandery. "I'm still perplexed by it. But now I'm terrified to learn that it's not just her..."

"Korilu!" exclaims the fashion victim, "Fancy running into you here! And I see you're a legitimate merchant now. Or do my eyes deceive me?" [insane - façade - the character]
Korilu and her acquaintance talk at a sustained 6Gs for several minutes, but their conversation is laced with so much argot and vague references that neither Lin nor Tandery can follow it. Lin studies the man. He's probably a few years older than Elleder, but looks like he's got at least 15 years on him. His watery bloodshot eyes and the dark splotches below his jawline, just visible beneath a slightly mismatched shade of concealer, signal to Lin his favourite vice, and consequently, how little she should trust him.
Finally there is a pause in the conversation, and Korilu remembers her shipmates.
"Lin, Tandery, this is my old, er, let's say 'associate', Torlisz."
"Charmed, I'm sure," says Tandery.
"I don't suppose you ladies are at all interested in a small, profitable venture?" [mysterious - rumour - rewards]
"Er, that's sort of what we're here for. Being free traders, that is."

Q: What is the term? (random word from the rulebook=) grazer]
"Have you heard of 'grazers'?"
"Depends on the context."
"They're ostensibly scavengers, but they are really bands of thieves who prey on offworlders. They'll be auctioning off captured technology and valuables in a warehouse in [1d6=] a day's time. Many wonderful things can bought and sold during these 'grazes'. The police should have been bribed to stay away. Why, these events almost never get raided! And such opportunities to be had!"
"Definitely gonna keep that in mind," says Korilu. "Where is it?"
Torlisz gives her the coordinates to one of the portside warehouses, which she dutifully copies into her datapad. Tandery looks at Lin and raises her eyebrows inquisitively. Lin shakes her head in a barely-perceptible 'no'. Oblivious, Korilu and Torlisz exchange local comm frequencies, and vaguely agree to meet up for drinks later.

Back on the ship, Harrisumn has prepared some hot, savoury soup, and is ladling out seven bowls for everyone assembled in the upstairs lounge. "Not only is this the finest soup recipe coreward of Tronzigk, but it will actually aid in the healing of minor wounds and abrasions. At least according to my nan."
"Wasn't your nan a choir instructor?" asks Elleder.
"Yeah, but I meant my other nan. The one that worked in genetic engineering."
"Huh. Sorry to make this about business, but how did the port excursion go?"
"Mixed results," says Tandery. "Three high passengers, eleven low. And only 15 tonnes of cargo."
"Sometimes we run light. Can't be helped."
"But, Captain," says Korilu. "I ran into an old friend and he's given us a nice little tip..."
Korilu explains everything she was told about the 'graze', and nearly verbatim. Lin at first fears that she'll need to interject, but the Captain's expression reassures her that there is no need.
"I don't think it's a good idea," says Elleder, "but I won't stop any of you from going if that's what you want to do. But remember, we're running light next trip, so no one end up in jail -- we won't have enough cash on hand to make bail."

The next day is mostly taken up in getting the cargo onboard, and most of that is waiting for the half-sized shipping crates to be delivered, one at a time.
That night Korilu and Diter leave for the auction. Lin seeks out Tandery immediately.
"Hey, can we talk? About what happened back at the racing club..."
"Yeah, I know. I'm sorry. I just freeze up sometimes when there's a gun fight. It's weird, I mean... put me in the cockpit of a 10-tonne fighter and I'll race straight at an SDB that's bearing down with all lasers blazing away. But tiny lead slugs whistling through the air just brings on a full panic."
"Oh, wow, that's... that's, uh, something. But not what I meant."
"Oh? Colour me embarrassed. What did you want to talk about?"
"Diter. He did it again. This time with the captain present, though I'm not sure how much he actually saw."
"Great."
"So, do you think I can go to the Captain? I mean, as the newest one aboard?"
"I'll go with you."

Q: Elleder's response (UNE): friendly - gratitude - wealth]
They find the Captain in his stateroom, and Lin makes her case. He listens attentively, then weighs his words before speaking.
"I'm afraid I was too much in shock to notice what was happening. Not that I don't believe you. But so far, everything he's done has been in defence of his shipmates, and whatever Tandery's concerns about his naval record, he's not shirked a single duty since we brought him on. I'll have a word with him about his behaviour, but I need to keep him on side. He's handy in a scrape, and he knows how to pull in big patrons like the Herrin."

"Well, I feel deflated," sighs Tandery as they walk back up the stairs to the passenger's lounge.
"I'm sure we can find a way to get rid of him," replies Lin.
"I just hope it's before he does something awful to Korilu. Or all of us!"
"I'll handle it. Trust me, I won't let him hurt any one of us. I've gotten rid of worse than him before."
"When you say, 'gotten rid of'...?"
"Let's not worry about that right now. What I propose is that we crack open that bottle of Samstag 1101 I got at the duty-free and pop in one of those bootleg holos I picked up at the salvage yard."
"Ooooh, I'm game. Did you get anything good?"
"Not... not good, exactly."
"Oh gods, should I be worried?"

Passengers and freight all uneventfully loaded, the Effi Briest lifts off from Drokkotli's starport. Once above the clouds and fog, the bridge crew are treated to a spectacular pink sunset streaked with deep crimson. So arresting is the sight that Captain Elleder alerts the passengers over the ship-wide intercom, and even the Herrin joins the small contingent in the lounge to look with rapt awe out the view port.

They are not long out of the atmosphere when a distress call comes over the emergency channel. "Mayday, mayday. Modular Cutter Bhima requesting assistance. We have complete drive failure. Please respond."
"Range?" asks the Captain.
"31,000km," replies Tandery. "Not too far off. I can plot an intercept if you give me a minute."
"Let me check the scanners first... power readings are consistent with a normal cutter, I think. Hard to tell at this range." [11+ to scan for weaponry, DM +electronics : E 2D+2=6, fail]
"You think it's a trap?" asks Lin.
"It had crossed my mind. But we can't refuse to answer a distress call." He opens up the internal crew-only com channels. "We've got a distress call. Everyone suit up. Harrisumn, pass out weapons from the ship's locker, just in case. We'll send Korilu to help, the rest of us are on alert. Try not to let the passengers see you in vacc suits this time. We don't want a repeat of Jaktan."
[Q: Is this the Herrin's enemies? unlikely (5+): O1 C6 - no]
Despite all the paranoia, the distress call turns out to be completely legitimate. Korilu floats over on a tether, and aids the panicking crew of the cutter to get their M-drives operating at a reasonable .67g (they had been accelerating at .03g), allowing them to reach their mining derrick for repairs before their life support runs dry. Once Korilu is safely back aboard, they continue towards their the rendez-vous with the Herrin's yacht.

About twenty minutes before their agreed-upon course is due to intersect with that of the yacht (at the 50 planetary Diameter turn-about for safe jump), another ship comes on the scope, also seemingly on an intercept. Elleder stabs the commo in frustration. "Herrin, you'd better come down to the bridge. I think we've got trouble." Then he collects himself and in his most breezy, nonchalant tones makes a ship-wide announcement. "This is Captain Elleder speaking. We're about to pass through an uncharted debris field. There should be no difficulties, but better safe than sorry. All passengers should remain in their quarters until I give the all-clear. I strongly advise you to strap in in case of any turbulence from sudden manoeuvres. Space is pretty big though, so it's unlikely anything will hit the ship."
Meanwhile, the Herrin has radioed her yacht from Tandery's station, telling them to run.
[Q: Is the yacht OK still? certain (2+): O5 C6 - yes
Q: Is the yacht armed? likely (3+): O1 C8 - no]
The crew -- and the Herrin, who insists on remaining on the bridge -- once again don vacc suits, and Harrisumn passes out armaments in the event they need to repel borders. Diter heads to engineering and the Captain helps Herrin Ngamová strap into a seat before resuming his own position (ironically, these are the positions where the gunners would be, had they any armaments).
[Round 1]
Tandery keeps everyone updated on relative positions, headings, and velocities of all three ships as Lin does her best to fly in an erratic fashion to present a less easy target. "Shut up or I'm relieving you of duty!" Tandery switches off. "Sorry Captain, but I've dealt with hysterical engineering crew before. It's the only way."
"You know I defer to your experience in these things. Still, you might want to tell her sorry, later."
"Captain!" interjects the Herrin over the crew channel. "De Rheim -- my pilot -- has just informed me they've been hit. Their jump drives are offline."

"Oh, OK, but you didn't hear this from me."
"Of course."
"Harrisumn is mad that you didn't disclose your 'condition' and says he still won't believe it's not cybernetic feedback until he can see a brain scan. So he voted against. Korilu said she had you clocked as a fraud, but that you were really nice to her --plus you didn't actually damage the power plant with your crazy flying-- so you could stay. The Captain was really really really furious that you lied to him about, erm, basically everything, but then he got left with the deciding vote, and I guess I may have talked him round."

+Event: NPC Negative - Herrin N - Arrive / Enemies (this set up the situation when they arrive at Pardub)]]
Twenty eight hours before they are due to exit jump, Lin hears a soft knock at the door. She's not sure what it is until it is repeated a little more forcefully.
"It's open!" she rasps.
Tandery comes in and sits down beside Lin on the edge of the bed.
"The Captain told us your story -- well, the salient points of it -- and then he put it to a vote. And we voted to keep you aboard. I'm glad you can stay. You will stay, won't you?" [friendly - happiness - recent scene]
"Of course!"
"Good. We're out of jump tomorrow. The captain said that if you feel up to flying, you can join us on the bridge. Otherwise, rest up. He has the feeling the Herrin is about to engage our services for a follow-on mission, and wants you fighting-fit."
"I'll be there. The, erm, crisis passed a couple days ago. I'm OK, now, really, just a bit rat-arsed."
"So you've been moping in here the whole time?"
"It was either that or try to bury flower petals in the cargo hold."
"What? I-- oh, haha. Took me a minute. Were your parents literature professors or something?"
"Or something."
"I should probably let you rest."
"Yeah. Wait-- you haven't told me how the vote went. I assume it wasn't unanimous."
"Ummm...."
"I'm a big girl, I can take it. How did it go?"
"I'm not sure if I should say..."
"Please?"
"You know I voted for you."
"Yes. I mean, I'd hoped. Thanks. But who else?"
"Lin..."
"Please, Tandery. I need to know where I stand. Or I'll just be worried the whole time. Maybe if I can be nicer to them I can win their trust back."
"So Diter voted against me too?"
"Yes. He said that given your history, and with everything he'd personally witnessed, he didn't half mind admitting that he was kinda afraid of you!"
